A few evenings ago I received a call from an organization to which we have regularly donated money:

Hello! Is blog-Stedman there?

No, he is working.

Oh! Then I will call him back another time!

Is this about a donation?

Yes!

I am his wife. I can handle this. I will give you $50.

Blog-Stedman gave $100 last year!

I will give you $50.

I am only taking matches or ups!

I said I would give you $50.

Your husband gave $100 last year!

I said I will give you $50. Are you going to take it?

Oh. I guess so...

And now for a totally random photo I took last week:

you were so sweet to actually talk to them.

nice sign.

I think I'd go after that window with a Sharpie.

Dude, they didn't want to take your money... That's just pushy and obnoxious.

Can I just tell you how utterly insane it drives me when I see things misspelled on businesses. I find it so very very unprofessional and obnoxious.

But it does make for great blog fodder ;-)

Maybe it's one of those new fangled words we'll soon see Webster's adopting (one of my all-time top pet peeves - we all evolve, but stop catering to the masses by butchering the English language!)

You know - they console and consult?

Now where's my red pen?

Em

Eudae-mamia said...

Oh, and kudos to you for not telling that chick where she could shove your contribution.

How charitable of you!

Jenni Jiggety said...

I will glady take your 5o dollars! I will even give you a consoltation in return because that's the kind of gal I am!

Angie Ledbetter said...

Next time tell the brassy phone solicitor, "Oh, you don't want the $50? Okay, how's about $20?" and keep working your way toward -0-.

Love the store front. Consolation/Consultation/Consolida-
tion? Whatever it is, they're nice to offer to bring it to your house.

argh....

just ... argh...

(yeah, i'm profound this morning)

You might be the only person I know who is nice to people begging for money on the phone. I won't even talk to them. Not that that's any sort of consoltation.

Love the photo! Makes me want to take white out to the window! lol...

And hey, if you are giving away money, throw some this way!

Tootsie Farklepants said...

Wouldn't it have been rad if the call was being monitored for quality and training purposes and when he said that they're only taking matches or ups, you hung up on him? oops.

That photo is priceless!

EatPlayLove said...

gosh they should have been thrilled to not get the NO right off the bat! And I love the consolation! Ha...

jill jill bo bill said...

You are so much nicer than me! I would have said $50 and I will throw in a kid. They would never call me back.

The Mom said...

LOL, I would have only offered $10

Gin said...

That's a hoot! I would have gone backwards, too, Angie!

Jennifer H said...

I would have docked it $10 every time they seemed to decline.

When did it become okay to be rude when asking for money????

Lisa@verybusymomwith4 said...

Oh is this the place that gives counsel to those who lose the spelling bee?!

And on solicitors--I swear they mark which family member gives--they always call and ask for Mike. And if he's not home, they hang up :)

Karen said...

Oh, do they want to console people in their homes and offices?

We screen all our calls just in case it's someone seeking a donation. The one that calls the most comes up as "Fund Raiser" on our Caller ID, though, so that makes it easy to avoid *grin*.

Valarie said...

I hate it when they call. If I wanted to give to them I will find them. I just don't even like answering the phone anymore.

dddiva said...

Wow, I do believe I'd have had to tell the witch that I'd be giving all my contributions to those who appreciate them and given not one red cent and made sure the Mr didn't either. Sheesh, begging for $ then being an azz about it. Now I've heard it all.

Happy Campers said...

Where did you take that picture? That's hillarious!

Danielle said...

I lost my favorite purse...think somebody will come console me in my home???

Threeboys1mommy said...

I'd be happy to take the other $50 off your hands... you know so blog-Stedmans books stay in order.

foolery said...

You are my hero. But if you had gone backwards, like a few people above mentioned, I'd have to quit my job to go worship you.

"I SAID I'd give you $45. What's the matter with $40? Sheesh! If someone offered to give ME $35, I'd jump at it, because $30 will buy me a LOT of jug wine!"

Weaselmomma said...

I promise that I will always gladly accept any money you would like to give away to me in any denomination without a single complaint.

Brittany said...

WHAT!? I would have told them they were going to take your $50 and they were going to like it.

Elaine A. said...

Get a dictionay people! (or at least go to dictionary.com!)

So you're given the other $50 to me, right? ; )

Misty said...

oh my flippin' gosh... that is just flat out ridiculous.

Just so you know, for next time... I will take $50 any time, and I would gladly take $25 the following year.

Manic Mommy said...

Hoo-kay then $0 it is!

And the sign is priceless. Big red F.

Ron Davison said...

Oddly enough, I have the same policy. I'm only accepting donations of $100 or more. Sadly, no takers as yet. I remain optimistic, though.
And just to make sure that my records are up to date, could you again tell me your phone number?

Trannyhead said...

You're a far nicer person than I am. Just thought I'd share.

Debbie said...

That phone story is a riot! And I am still not even sure what those poor people who put that sign on the window even meant. Bless them.

suzannah said...

out of control!

my pet peeve is misplaced quotes on sign. they drive me "crazy." i "hate them." aaaaahhhh.

JCK said...

I don't get that aggressiveness and then acting like they're not going to even take it. In this economy? Anything is amazing.

And I probably need a CONSOLTation. Whatever that means. Cool reflection on that misspelled office window. ;0

stephanie (bad mom) said...

Professional bad spelling gives me hives. Ack.

And a charity arguing with you?? WTH? You're generous for continuing to offer...

Scary Mommy said...

You are so much nicer than I. I need to work on my phone skills; I'm such a nasty bitch.

Miranda said...

Wow, that seems so greedy! I wouldn't have donated if they'd argued with me like that.. amazing how they think it's okay to be so rude and pushy.

Mandy said...

You should have told them to shove it up their you know what! Love "blog-Stedman"!

Suzie said...

Ill take the 50 bucks if they wont

Nanny Goats In Panties said...

You have more patience that I do. Name-calling would have ensued by the third ignorant response of "blg-Stedman gave $100...".

Colleen said...

Huh - no spell check on the sticky letter making machine? Bah!

Jennifer said...

wow. how completely rude of them!! i would have said a lower number every time they said something about my husband! WTF??

i'm glad you stood your ground. ;)

great random pic! ;)

have a good weekend.

xoxoxox

Wow. it's hard for me to imagine the wisdom of anyone looking for donations this week. That's just... bizarre. Then to not take the money and run?? Very strange.

Sabrae said...

You are right... lol you can't even give money away! haha!!! How rude of that organization! lol Give me the $50.... I won't argue :) Have a wonderful day

Rachael said...

You are nicer than I am. Derrick ALWAYS gives money to anyone (well, practically anyone) who asks, and I'm sure they're alwasy dissappointed when the get ME anwering the phone!

What are they offering CONSOLTS on, I wonder?

Rachael said...

I was almost going to delete the last comment and repost (typos) but then I realized the irony of making typos in a comment where I just made fun of a typo! Of course, mine wasn't on a great big glass window, and I'm guessing they didn't type that. And, I wasn't offering up a consolt, er consult, or anything...
